When you have to manage a lifelong condition like diabetic nerve pain (also called diabetic neuropathy), it will be prudent to think about long-term solutions. All that you need to do under such circumstances is to bring some lifestyle changes in order to protect yourself from the disease.

These following 10 foot care tips can help you to protect yourself from diabetic nerve pain:

1. Check your feet every day
Ensure to check your feet and the regions between your toes daily. Most of the infections and blisters occur between your toes. However, diabetic neuropathy may not allow you to feel them until infection occurs or they become irritated.

2. Wear well fitted shoes
An ill fitted shoe can cause a blister convert into a sore, which in turn may become infected and take a lot of time to heal. So, purchase better-fitting shoes and wear comfortable socks.

3. Wash your feet with warm water
Instead of using hot water, use lukewarm water to wash your feet. However, don’t soak your feet for long as waterlogged sores will take more time to heal. Remember to pat your feet and the regions between your toes dry right away.

4. Don’t walk barefoot
Give your heels and toes enough protection by wearing shoes or slippers. It is advisable to wear your shoes with socks, as plastics, leather and artificial shoe materials can cause irritation of your skin and cause blisters to occur quickly.

5. Consult your doctor
Whenever you feel any unusual signs or sensation in your feet, toes or legs, tell your doctor about the same -irrespective of how trivial it may seem.

6. Keep your skin soft and dry
Due to the high glucose levels, you may suffer from dry and cracked skin. Remember that cracked skin enables bacteria to get under your skin easily, thereby making the healing process of infections delayed. So, you can use some skin lotion daily to keep the skin of your feet soft. However, ensure that your feet stays dry and not damp.

7. Opt for non-impact exercises
Go for exercises that have negligible impact on your feet like cycling, swimming, tai chi and yoga.

8. Go for orthotics
You can consider fitted orthotics to offer the weak muscles of your feet some support, thereby decreasing the diabetic nerve pain. You may even opt for orthopedic shoes or foot braces.

9. Fix hammertoes, corns and bunions
Your shoes will not fit comfortably if you have hammertoes, corns and bunions. So, get them treated at the earliest.

10. Keep your blood sugar under control
The best way to treat diabetic nerve pain is to effectively manage your diabetes. So, keep your glucose levels under control by using proper diet, exercise and meditations.

Type 2 diabetes: non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, is a disease that occurs when the body has no problem in insulin production, there is no shortage of insulin in this disease.

a healthy individual produces approximately 31 units of insulin each day,
a person with Type 2 diabetes may secrete as much as 114 units.

What a difference! So, why is this? There is some kind of block in the cells’ ability to utilize the insulin that is produced. The insulin should be carried into the cells, but something is blocking its entry. This form of diabetes stems from an underlying condition known as insulin resistance.

Anybody with a family history of Type 2 diabetes can be at risk of acquiring this disease. That’s why it is important to educate yourself on this form of diabetes. Know its causes, and protect yourself from getting it.

Obesity, or too high a proportion of fat in the body tissues, is associated with marked insulin resistance. Where this weight is carried is also a factor, fat accumulated in the abdominal area giving a much greater risk. Excess fat prevents the insulin from entering the body’s cells and makes the body resistant to it.

Maintain a physically active lifestyle to keep a healthy body weight. Turn too much television watching into physically demanding activities like getting into sports or enrolling into a fitness center. Even making some simple changes like parking further from the entrance of the store or taking the elevator at work can get your body fitter. Inactivity or a very low-level of activity contributes to insulin resistance and may bring on Type 2 diabetes in some people. As well, inactivity often leads to obesity which compounds the risk.

Cut out excess fatty and oily food to help stop obesity and to prevent Type 2 diabetes as well. It is important to educate yourself on what food to avoid and what to eat to keep this form of diabetes away. An inappropriate diet is a major contributor to insulin resistance and weight gain and therefore is a significant cause of diabetes.

eating high calorie or sugar rich food like cakes and chocolates too often can lead to diabetes. Replace them with more nutritious deserts like oranges, berries and other citrus fruits.
avoid carbonated and alcoholic drinks as they contain too many calories.
drink at least eight glasses of water a day to eliminate excess sugar in the blood.

Refined carbohydrates are rich in sugar, too. When a carbohydrate is ingested, it breaks down into sugar. Carbohydrates provide energy. Whole wheat, oats, barley, red rice, brown rice, millet and wheat berries are better substitutes to white pasta and white bread. They contain fibers that flush out harmful toxins in the body while giving energy to the body.

The risk of developing Type 2 diabetes is higher if it runs in the family. It is a genetic disease, which means you have the wiring installed for this disease from birth. It is important to educate yourself on diabetes and family genetics to avoid being an heir of this inheritance. Consult a family doctor to learn about your family health history to stop diabetes from running in your family. Although there are some ethnicities that are more prone to developing Type 2 diabetes, it does not have to be a foregone conclusion just because you are African-American, Native American or Latino.

The same thing applies in that lifestyle changes can override genetics. Type 2 diabetes is caused by multiple factors. Obesity, excess calories, lack of exercise, and aging can all lead to insulin resistance. Remove the environmental risks and you can probably modify the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Most people completely ignore diabetes signs and symptoms. This can be a deadly decision. It is estimated that nearly 27% of the population has this disease (either diagnosed, undiagnosed or pre-diabetes). Ignoring the easy to look for symptoms does not make it go away. In fact, it makes you more and more likely to lose your life to it. And as you will see at the end of this article, it can very quickly kill you.

I myself ignored all the classic signs and was within two weeks of dying when a chiropractor actually recognized it as diabetes and sent me to a doctor right away for treatment. So what are the diabetes signs and symptoms you can look for yourself or your child previous to seeking a medical opinion?

Thirst and Frequent Urination

Perhaps the easiest way to tell if you have out-of-control diabetes is to watch for an excessive thirst and subsequently frequent urination. Before I was diagnosed I had such a thirst that even after drinking a gallon of water would not go away. It would be followed by having to visit the restroom 20 to 40 times a day. Talk about embarrassing.

Tired All the Time

Another obvious symptom is constant tiredness or fatigue. People often mistake out-of-control diabetes with Fibromyalgia, Mononucleosis, the Flu and other diseases because of the tiredness and weakness it creates. You may also feel nauseous like you have the flu. A high blood sugar level will make you feel bad in general (like when you told your parents, “I don’t feel so good todayl”).

Hungry All the Time

Your cells need constant energy in the form of glucose. The problem with diabetes is that the sugar is not getting into the cells and instead stays in the bloodstream. Eventually the sugar is eliminated through the urine – but not before taking a very damaging route.

Because your body is not getting the energy it needs, it tries to take in more and more food to compensate. It is a destructive circle because the sugar crystals in your bloodstream are like little razors inside the vessels. Destroying your eyes, kidneys, feet, nerves and just about everything else becomes their task. And this is where most long term diabetic complications come from.

Rapid Weight Loss

Weight loss is the result of your body dumping most of its internal glucose (all food turns to glucose in the body or is eliminated). I lost over 30 pounds in a few months despite hitting the Las Vegas buffets a little too often. Doesn’t sound like such a bad symptom but you are doing incredible damage to your body to lose this weight. If you are in this stage, you are also likely in a condition called ‘Ketoacidosis’ and are weeks from dying.

Headaches

A headache can be a common symptom — but if it’s mixed with some of the previous symptoms, find a doctor right away. It will eventually kill you. What is happening is because sugar is not getting to your brain cells. Oxygen is also not getting to them and creates swelling of the brain.

Hair Loss

One of the most unfortunate symptoms of diabetes is unexpected hair loss. Right before I was diagnosed, I was almost pulling clumps of hair out. It quickly stopped and reversed once I was started on insulin.

Conclusion

They should teach diabetes education to every child as a required class so that when they begin to see the classic diabetes signs and symptoms in their bodies, they know to seek medical advice before it is too late.

Do you worry about getting diabetes? I know I do as diabetes is a problem within my family. I personally do not have diabetes at this point time but I watched my father contract diabetes in his mid-50s and eventually died from complications related to diabetes at age 63. The advice and going to offer you is from my personal experience only and I am not a physician.

I’ve researched many different diseases in my quest to learn more about how our bodies work and there has been too overriding factors that help avoid or control several problems that can occur with the body. Those two factors are diet and exercise. If you have a poor diet or do not exercise properly your chances of contracting diabetes raises dramatically. Now if it’s hereditary you may still get diabetes at one point or another until you get diabetes issue to everyone you can to help keep it at bay.

I personally have taken the point of exercise and proper eating seriously. Let me offer you some pointers that I follow every day. First I believe it’s important to get out and exercise at least five times a week. I like to take a good 30 to 60 minutes brisk walk every day. It’s really wonderful if you get your family involved with it. I find that my son or my wife like to go with me each day. The company helps make the walk of by very quickly. They will also motivate you to get out many just don’t feel like getting it. I also like the difference in rhythm of the walk between my son and my wife. My son is 16 years old and likes to walk very fast. So when I walked with him, I get a very vigorous workout. My wife on the other hand is only about 5 feet 6 inches in her stride is a lot smaller than my son’s. Walks with her are not as strenuous, but still worthwhile and enjoyable.

Next I really have to watch what I eat. Gone are the days when I can binge on hamburgers and hotdogs. I still enjoy hamburgers and hotdogs here and there but I have to watch how money I eat over time. Also I do try to get more vegetables and fruits in my diet. Plus I think having a good multivitamin helps a lot too. I’ve also been toying with the idea of taking antioxidants as well. I try to make sure it eat at meal times only and only take one helping. To be honest, I do cheat on their helpings. But also make myself responsible to stepping on the scales everyday to check my weight. If I start seeing my weight climb, I know that I’m starting too much and I have to ease up on eating a bit.

According to statistics generated by the American Diabetes Association, 23.9 million Americans have diabetes. This includes children and adults. However, only 17.9 million of these have been diagnosed and know they have it. Of the 23.9 million, 5.7 million do not realize they have this disease. In addition to these statistics, 57 million Americans have pre-diabetes. Pre-diabetes is the condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to warrant a diagnosis of diabetes.

Some population groups are more vulnerable to diabetes than others. It is more often found among African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and the elderly. Diabetes and pre-diabetes are determined by two blood tests – the FPG or Fasting Plasma Glucose test and the OGTT or Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. It is important for at risk groups to be tested for pre-diabetes for two reasons. It is possible for damage to occur to the body in the pre-diabetes stage. And, at this time, it is possible to prevent the occurrence of diabetes. There are medications available that can do this but the most effective measures have been lifestyle changes.

One of the most important factors in preventing diabetes and pre-diabetes is maintaining a healthy diet. The foods you choose should be the ones that prevent insulin spikes and maintain a steady blood sugar level. It is important to eat a diet that is high in fiber, rich in fruits and vegetables, and low in certain fats. Starting with breakfast, select a cereal that has at least twelve grams of fiber per eight ounce serving. Then opt for whole grain breads instead of white bread. Aim for five servings of fruit each day and be sure to include an apple. The old adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” may well have more wisdom than myth. Another food that helps steady blood sugar is beans so include them often in chili, salad, and soups.

Certain fats should be avoided. Saturated fats and trans fats make it difficult for your body to control blood sugar. Trans fats are also damaging to your circulatory system providing two reasons to eliminate them from your diet. Here, you need to be a food detective. Many labels will read zero trans fats. But read the list of ingredients. If the words ‘hydrogenated’ or ‘partially hydrogenated’ are mentioned, do not buy the item. While it is all right to include potatoes in your diet, avoid or strictly limit French fries as they are usually made with saturated and trans fats. Satisfy your fat requirements by choosing healthy fats such as olive oil or sesame oil for cooking. Eat peanut butter, soy butter, avocados and olives. Since it is important to have omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, either eat fish a couple of times a week or take a supplement.

Did you know you can save a lot of money by buying your diabetes medical supplies on the Internet? Are you also aware that many of these retailers are not based in the U.S. and therefore not subject to FDA laws or standards? If you’re considering the purchase of your diabetes supplies and equipment online, keep reading to find out what you can do to protect yourself.

Find an American Company

If you’re buying diabetes medical supplies off a web-based company, look for one that’s either based in the United States or your own country. Even if the prices are better, a supplier stationed in a foreign land isn’t held to the same quality standards as one here. Remember, this is your health.

On top of potentially being unsafe, importing foreign drugs or medical equipment may be against the law and could get you into serious trouble with U.S. customs. So, don’t risk your health or your record by buying medical supplies from outside the country.

Prescription Required When Needed

If your type of insulin requires a prescription, whether federally or in your state, then you should only buy from online suppliers that check prescriptions thoroughly. Do not do business with a retailer that doesn’t follow the rules.

Check the Shipping Policy

Before you buy from an online retailer, find out how the goods are shipped. Are they properly protected against breakage and possible contamination? How fast do they ship and by what methods? If they send your product by ground then how do they ensure the package won’t be pierced or possibly damaged? And don’t forget to include the shipping costs into your total costs calculation. If the shipping is outrageous, then your online deal may not be such a steal after all.

Scan Customer Reviews

Before you buy a product online, you should read the customer reviews of both the online retailer and the product itself. For example, if you’re in the market for a new test strip system, be sure to peruse the customer reviews of other users. They should be right on the retailer’s website.

You should also read retailer reviewers. It’s here that customers talk about a retailer’s customer service, their shipping fees, return policy and the overall buying experience. To find reviews for online retailers, try sites like Nextag or Froogle.

Shy Away from eBay

eBay may be great for buying video games or electronics, but it’s not an ideal place to purchase medical equipment. Is saving a few dollars’ worth receiving goods that are expired, discontinued or rejected for poor quality?

We’re all in this together. The cause that triggers the onset of diabetes symptoms is usually a mix of risk factors both genetic and modifiable in origin. The following are the major causes of diabetes mellitus:

1) Hereditary predisposition. In less than ten percent of the cases, the cause of diabetes mellitus may be associated with the trillions of A-T, C-G combination of pyrimidine and purine nitrogenous bases, which determine the genetic makeup of which humans are made of, thus, their genotype and phenotype. Even in the absence of identifiable modifiable risk factors such as viral or autoimmune insult, diabetes mellitus still ensues. This is more common to those with Type I DM.

2) Lifestyle factors. Unhealthy habits can compound genetic predisposition and lead to the development of diabetes mellitus. Improper dietary intake rich in sugar, lack of exercise, and stress can lead to development of insulin resistance of body cells.

3) Environmental factors. Diabetes symptoms are triggered by an autoimmune response, which causes auto destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas. This means that the T and B autoimmune cells fail to see the cells of the pancreas as part of oneself and institute an attack mechanism. The resulting cell destruction leads to decreased production of insulin, thus, the initiation of diabetes symptoms. Common causes include viral attacks as in the case of mumps, cytomegalovirus, and rubella toxins in the body. Another is taking of drugs, which severely destroy the cells of the pancreas. Certain lifestyle disease states such as pancreatitis may also be a cause.

4) Unknown causes. These are the so-called idiopathic diabetes mellitus wherein a single cause is not identifiable.

As a clincher – because of the presence of several and varied causes of diabetes symptoms, preventing the disease is a combination of health promotion and disease prevention strategies.

Apple cider vinegar prevents blood sugar spikes after meals. Minimizing sugar spikes helps to reverse insulin resistance…the hallmark of type 2 diabetes.

One study by Italian researchers showed that when healthy subjects consumed 4 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with a meal, there was a 30 percent reduction in their glycemic response, or rise in blood sugar. Reducing your glycemic response is essential for beating diabetes.

2. Lipoic Acid

Glucose (blood sugar) destroys insulin receptors. Without the receptors, insulin can not work. Lipoic acid is a naturally occurring antioxidant that protects insulin receptors.

Recently, researchers revealed dramatic effects in improving insulin sensitivity in overweight adults suffering from type 2 diabetes. The antioxidant produced significant improvements in just four weeks.

Lipoic acid is also effective in treating diabetic neuropathy, which is characterized by numbness, tingling, and pain in the extremities. A large, randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter, double-blind study involving 328 patients with type 2 diabetes revealed that it significantly improved symptoms.

I suggest taking 200 to 300 mg/day of R-lipoic acid (the “R” form is more potent).

3. Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a potent antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress. Diabetics experience a high degree of oxidation that causes cellular damage.

CoQ10 is required to convert fats and sugars into cellular energy. Yet, the natural production of CoQ10 declines in diabetics. The best form of CoQ10 to supplement with is called ubiquinol. This form is easily absorbed and significantly increases blood levels.

I suggest taking 200 mg/day of ubiquinol CoQ10.

4. Pyridoxamine

The pyridoxamine form of vitamin B6 protects the body’s proteins from glycation. Sugar (glucose) in the blood can bind to proteins, particularly when blood levels are high. This binding causes the formation of dysfunctional proteins, which accumulate with time and contribute to some of the signs of aging.

Scientific research suggests that if you want to help protect your body against glycation, nutrients that help prevent the formation of AGEs may be beneficial. The latest information shows that pyridoxamine may also be of significant help in preventing the formation of these aging molecules.

There are ways to prevent Alzheimer’s and memory loss. They are not inevitable as aging. Through exercise, a healthy diet and taking supplements for brain nourishment, you can reduce any inflammation that can trigger the development of Alzheimer’s.

A healthy diet that is low in trans-fats and saturated fats is ideal. You can also include white flour products and refines sugars as well as vegetables, fruits and foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. If you will combine these with lifestyle changes, you can protect yourself from diabetes and heart disease.

Studies show that even if there are already indications that your brain is already developing or is plaqued with the signs of Alzheimer’s, you can still function fine as long as your heart is healthy and you don’t have diabetes. If you keep your brain healthy, it can still create supplementary circulation that can replace what it lost. It is the loss of circulation which is normally a result of mini strokes that doctors note to be the triggering factors which can set dementia in motion. This means it is the loss of circulation and not the plaques that result to dementia and Alzheimer’s.

These days, although there are already prescription drugs that can combat Alzheimer’s like Aricept, preventing the disease or controlling it during its early stages is still the best option. Aside from healthy lifestyle practices, there are supplements for brain nourishment that can help sustain as well promote good brain functionality.

Some of the noted supplements for the brain include a comprehensive multivitamin, CoEnzyme Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Phosphatidyl Serine and Gingko Biloba as well as Acetyl-L-Carnitine and DHA.

For your comprehensive multivitamin, it should have a minimum of 400 mcg folic acid as well as 500 mg of vitamin C. It is a good supplement for brain nourishment because it can reduce homocysteine (known for triggering strokes and other types of heart diseases). This is after doctors discovered that the greatest brain damage that can happen is a result of very low blood levels of folic acid.

With the number of emergent cases climbing to 7 million each year, diabetes is quickly becoming one of the most prevalent diseases in the world. Since approximately 6.4% of the global adult population already has diabetes, chances are you know someone affected. But what is diabetes exactly? How does it work?

The root problem of diabetes is faulty insulin production. Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed when the body is unable to create any insulin. Type 2 diabetes allows for the body to produce limited amounts of insulin, but not enough to sustain itself. So why is insulin important?

In order to extract energy from what we eat, our body cells need to be able to absorb natural sugars, such as glucose, from our bloodstream. Insulin is a hormone present in the bloodstream of a healthy body. Without the help of insulin, bodies with diabetes are unable to absorb glucose. As a result, the unused but valuable energy sources must exit the body through urination. What a waste.

As these wasted glucose molecules pass through the body unabsorbed, they take their nutritional value with them. A body with diabetes is forced to find energy elsewhere – by consuming its own fat cells. This leads to sudden weight loss – one of the most dangerous symptoms of diabetes.

Diabetes is classified as a metabolic disease, affecting the maintenance of energy within the body. Without regular insulin injections, diabetics do not have access to sufficient energy, leading to many problematic symptoms.

The immediate symptoms of diabetes are debilitating. With effects such as fatigue, frequent urination, elevated thirst, intense hunger, irritability, numbness, sudden weight loss, and blurry sight; diabetes is definitely a life changing disease.

Even more drastically, long term diabetes can result in: blindness, damage to the nervous system, heart disease, stroke, and even death.

In Canada alone, diabetes contributes to 41,500 yearly deaths.

Unfortunately there is no cure for diabetes yet.

This information is discouraging. With statistics so bleak, we should all be asking ourselves, “What can I do to protect my body from diabetes?”

The most effective way to prevent diabetes is to keep your body healthy. It’s proven that those at risk for type 2 diabetes can reduce their risk by 58% by living a balanced life style.
